A Net is a Box Unfolded
Syd Mercredi
About the book
My cyanotype textile book is a sculptural piece which explores the idea of the book as a total object. I used the story of the trickster god Loki getting caught in the net of his own creation as a thematic springboard. I created a collection of sculptural poetry that explores ideas of divided self, tricksters, laughter, and nesting dolls of madness.
About the author
Syd Mercredi is a Dené Indigenous artist raised on Treaty 6 Territory. Their work aims to bridge the gap between analog crafting & design. As an Indigenous maker, Syd regards analog making to be an infallible aspect of design. It elucidates the relationship between our hands & the materials that come from the land. They explore anything and everything that can be made by hand, but with a focus on zine-making and book design. Every form of crafting is relevant to their practice as a whole.
